1998 Mitsubishi Delica JB470 4×4 (Vantech Camper)
The “Mountain Goat” of Campers
If you’re looking for a tiny home that can actually handle a trail, this is it. This is a rare final year JB470—a collaboration between Vantech (Japan) and Reimo (Germany)Think of it as the Japanese version of a Westfalia but in Class C form, and built on a rugged Mitsubishi 4×4 truck chassis with a seamless fiberglass shell. These were only built between 1995-1998.
At just 16ft long, it’s shorter than most modern pickup trucks, meaning you can park it anywhere and turn around on tight fire roads where bigger rigs get stuck.
The Build & Drivetrain
-
Engine: The legendary 4D56 Turbo Diesel 2.5 liter. This is the same engine family Mitsubishi used to win the Dakar Rally. It’s simple, mechanical, and famous for being bulletproof. Parts are available everywhere.
-
4WD: Proper 5-speed manual with a High/Low range transfer case. It’s a true 4×4, not just AWD.
-
Fuel Economy: It gets an honest 18-22 mpg, which is unheard of for a rig with this much living space.
-
Condition: An excellently kept and well maintained 105,000 original miles. The interior is original but improved on many areas where the original 90s components and styling were lacking.
Living Off-Grid
Despite the size, the layout is incredibly smart:
-
Sleeping: Two beds. The cab-over bed slides out to fit two adults comfortably, and the dinette folds down into a second massive bed.
-
Heating: Genuine Webasto diesel heater (taps directly into the fuel tank). It’ll keep the cabin toasty in sub-zero temps without needing the engine running.
-
Windows: High-end Dometic / Seitz “Tern” double-pane acrylic windows (great for insulation and noise).
-
Kitchen/Bath: Stainless sink, 2-burner stove, 50L fridge, and a 15-gallon fresh water tank and a smaller 5 gallon auxilary tank with a separate faucet. There is a dedicated rear gear closet / bathroom space to fit a porta potti if needed. The larger faucet is on a longer pull out hose that can be used as a shower for rinsing off outside
-
Seating: Believe it or not, this rig is belted for 6 passengers.
