They are a semi-bonneted van with the front wheels positioned in front of the front seats for improved safety over the Hiace 100 series. Having passenger and driver airbags as well and enhanced front end structure. They are based on the regular Hiace platform, but adhere to tighter safety regulations required in Europe from the mid 1990s. They were very popular, being sold across Europe, New Zealand, Australia, and the UK markets from the mid 1990s.
